If you think you or someone you know has experienced a hate incident, there are a variety of reporting and support options available.
Reporting hate incidents
Speaking up can be difficult, but reporting makes a difference. It can help prevent it happening to other people and improve how services respond.
Anybody can report a hate crime - whether they are the victim, someone who witnessed the crime, or someone the victim has told about the crime or incident.
LSBU help and advice
LSBU will support any student that experiences a hate incident, whether they have witnessed such incidents or been a victim of them.
- Report and Support. - logging a report on this website lets us know that something has happened, and that you want to access information about your options for accessing support, and for reporting. You are not committing to a particular action by reporting an incident.
- Student Liaison Officer appointments - Some of the people in the Mental Health and Wellbeing Team have had specialist training in order to specifically respond to Hate Crime. You can let the person who experience Hate Crime know about this support. To speak with a Student Liaison Officer, a student should email us at studentwellbeing@lsbu.ac.uk - it is helpful if you clearly state you would like to meet with a Student Liaison Officer, and let us know your general availability for an appointment.
- Mental Health and Wellbeing appointments - we also offer appointments to more generally discuss how you're doing, any challenges you are dealing with, and the support that might be helpful. You can book a Mental Health and Wellbeing appointment using MyAccount. See this FAQ for more info: How do I book an appointment with the Mental Health and Wellbeing team?
Making a formal complaint.
You can formally report another LSBU student or member of staff if you believe they have acted inappropriately. LSBU’s response to hate incidents will be managed through existing procedures including:
- Students’ Complaints Procedure
- Student Disciplinary Procedure
- Speak Up Policy
- Student Halls of Residence Complaints Procedure
- Staff Dignity at Work procedures.
If a police investigation or criminal proceedings are taking place, LSBU will normally pause its own investigation until the criminal process is complete. This is because there is a high risk that a LSBU investigation could compromise any police investigation or criminal proceedings. However, LSBU may still take precautionary action whilst the internal investigation is paused.
