Sexually transmitted infections, often referred to as STIs, are infections that are passed between people during sexual activities like oral or penetrative sex. Some examples of STIs are:
- Chlamydia
- Genital Herpes
- Gonorrhoea
- Syphilis
- HIV
- Hepatitis B
- Crabs/public lice
- Human papillomavirus
- Trichomoniasis.
STIs are very common. In fact, over one million STIs are acquired every day worldwide. Some people feel awkward, embarrassed or ashamed of having an STI, and that's understandable. However, there is really nothing odd or strange about STIs at all.
The best way to prevent STIs is to always use condoms when having sex, particularly with a new sexual partner (even if you are already on a different form of contraception like the pill or the coil, as these don't prevent STIs).
