Who is my Personal Tutor, and how do I contact them?

Your personal tutor is an academic member of staff who will support your academic development. Ordinarily – unless they leave the University – they will be your tutor for the duration of your course.

They will take an active interest in you and will want to meet regularly to see how things are going. They will provide guidance at key moments in your university journey (when you move from the first to the second year for example, or to discuss plans after graduation).

Their role is not to go over or teach you specific course content (course tutors and module leaders do this), but if you have more general study support needs (not linked to specific assessments or modules), such as wanting to learn more about how to use feedback to improve, your personal tutor is the right person to speak with.

You can discuss your ideas about future careers too, and they can help you think about how you can use the opportunities here as building blocks to help you achieve your ambitions.

If you find yourself unsure who to speak to about an issue (especially a complex problem), your personal tutor will be able to put in touch with the right support.

By engaging with and getting to know your personal tutor, they will be an ideal person to provide you with a supportive reference for future job or further study applications.

How to book an appointment with your tutor

It’s easy to see when your personal tutor and other academics in your course team are free to meet with you:

  1. Log in to your MyAccount (if you haven't already), using your LSBU email address and password
  2. From the homepage, go to the 'My Support' tab
  3. Click on 'Schedule an Appointment'
  4. Click on 'Assigned' and choose your personal tutor (or other) from the list
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to book time with them.

When complete, you will get an email confirming the booking – as will the academic you plan to meet.
