What is Transition Mental Health Mentoring?

Are you autistic and feeling anxious about starting university? 

Do you feel concerned about how you will manage your studies and engage with other students? 

Would you like to explore coping strategies to help you have the best possible start to your university journey? 

If so, Transition Mental Health Mentoring might be helpful for you!  

 

Mentoring will provide you with a safe, non- judgmental, confidential and collaborative space to…. 

  • support you to find solutions to any questions or challenges that you might have at the start of your university journey  
  • promote positive wellbeing and explore coping mechanisms to deal with stress and anxiety 
  • create a good study/life balance and develop time management skills 
  • develop confidence to engage with your studies and the wider student community 

 

How does Transition Mental Health Mentoring work?

Mentoring will take place weekly for 6 weeks, with up to 2 sessions taking place before the term starts. Mentoring sessions will be 45 minutes, held in person or online. Alternative arrangements or adjustments can also be considered when you meet with your mentor.

What can you expect from your Mentor?

  • Participate fully, investing the time and effort necessary to make mentoring a success.  
  • Work with you to discover, clarify, understand and align with what you want to achieve. 
  • Offer honest and sensitive feedback, not withholding information or observations that might be useful to you. 
  • Be punctual for sessions and give notice of cancellation.

What can we expect from you?

  • Be accountable and willing to take steps to achieve your goals.  
  • Be respectful in all forms of communication.  
  • Be punctual for sessions and give notice of cancellation. 
  • Provide feedback so that your mentor can provide you with the best support possible. 

 

Am I eligible for Mental Health Mentoring support and what are the next steps? 

If you are interested in participating in pre-entry mentoring, please reach out to the Disability & Dyslexia team at the following email address: disability@lsbu.ac.uk. Your eligibility for pre-entry mentoring will then be discussed and the referral process will begin if mentoring is identified as a suitable support for you.
